The Core Technology of Topstar Cartesian Coordinate Robots

Cartesian coordinate robots used in injection molding must help injection molding machines operate more efficiently, not just remove parts from the mold. To achieve this, Topstar has integrated three core technologies into its Cartesian coordinate robots: a drive control system, ejector pin soft floating control, and mold-opening position compensation. This results in a stable, intelligent, and practical injection molding robot system suitable for precision inserts, optical components, and other demanding applications.
Topstar Cartesian Coordinate Robot’s Core Control System
The primary core technology of Topstar’s Cartesian coordinate robot is their control system. In traditional configurations, the communication speed between the controller, drive, and mechanical motion may be insufficient to support real-time execution. Topstar integrates the drive and control, enabling the robot to respond quickly and execute commands with near-zero latency.
Part removal, placement, and tracking typically need to be completed within a very short time window. If the robot waits too long after receiving a signal, the cycle speed slows down; if it reacts too early, it may collide with the mold or interfere with the ejector movement. With this control system, the Cartesian robot can execute these actions in real time, thereby improving the production line’s pace and reducing unnecessary movements.

High-Precision Encoder Feedback and Closed-Loop Repeatability
Topstar achieves repeatability accuracy of ±0.01 mm by combining high-precision encoder feedback with a closed-loop algorithm. This allows for easy application in precision inserts, optical components, and small parts requiring precise positioning. Using closed-loop control, the Cartesian robot can correct for minute positional deviations before they affect production. The closed-loop algorithm also helps the robot maintain performance during long production runs. Machine loads, temperatures, and mechanical stresses change slightly over time. Topstar’s system compensates for these changes through motion control, preventing them from affecting part handling and ultimately achieving stable, repeatable performance.
Flexible I/O Expansion and Multi-Process Adaptability
Topstar’s Cartesian coordinate robot supports flexible expansion of I/O ports and programs, enabling the manipulation of multiple grippers, suction cups, and different process steps within the same production environment. This support allows for expansion to up to eight suction cup devices and eight robotic arms, which is particularly useful in non-standard or multi-process scenarios. Even in these cases, the flexible Cartesian robot reduces the need for multiple automation systems. For manufacturers processing non-standard products, Topstar’s Cartesian robots can adapt to variations in part size, different process tasks, and diverse handling requirements, rather than being machines limited to specific situations.
Cartesian Robots with Wireless Network and MES Remote Operation
Topstar also features a built-in wireless network throughout the control system, supporting integration with Topstar’s MES system for remote monitoring and intelligent operation and maintenance. This makes the robot part of a connected manufacturing system. With MES connectivity, factory managers can monitor production status, machine operation, and alarm data in real time. For example, if abnormal movement occurs on the production line, MES data can quickly pinpoint the cause. Wireless connectivity also supports smarter maintenance. Maintenance teams can monitor early signs of change using data streams without waiting for faults to appear on the shop floor. This data-driven visibility of equipment operation is central to production in the smart factory.
Intelligent Interaction and Production Optimization of Cartesian Coordinate Robots
The second core technology of Topstar’s Cartesian coordinate robots is the use of ejector pin soft floating control to achieve zero-collision part picking. In production, the robot arm frequently comes into close contact with the ejector pin during part picking. If this contact generates excessive torque, the robot needs to take safety precautions. Topstar can detect contact torque in real time. If the torque exceeds a set threshold, it automatically triggers soft-floating control, enabling zero-collision part gripping.
Even slight collisions during part removal can cause various problems, including scrap, mold wear, and cycle interruptions. Ejector pin soft-floating control helps the robot smoothly absorb this change rather than forcing mechanical contact. This feature also improves safety and convenience during installation and maintenance. With this function enabled, the robotic arm can be manually pushed when the robot is stationary. If the motor malfunctions, the resistance is only friction. This also makes debugging and adjustments easier for engineers.

Mold Opening Position Compensation for Precise, High-Speed Production
Mold opening position compensation is the third core technology of Topstar’s Cartesian coordinate robot. Opening deviation is one of the most common causes of material output errors in injection molding. If the mold opening position does not match the robot’s expectations, the robot may miss parts, collide with the mold, or cause malfunctions.
This feature allows interaction with the injection molding machine’s mold-opening signal to obtain the actual mold-opening endpoint in real time. This means the robot doesn’t rely solely on fixed assumptions but uses real data from the machine to adjust its trajectory. Therefore, positioning errors caused by mold opening deviations are significantly reduced.
Once the system measures the actual endpoint, it automatically corrects the trajectory path. This prevents collisions and failures during part removal caused by inaccurate positioning. It allows the Cartesian-coordinate robot to adapt to the actual production process rather than forcing the process to remain perfect. It also supports external signal feedback mode, enabling precise grasping via sensors or PLC signals. This reduces interruptions in production, shortens debugging time, and better supports high-speed continuous production.
