Direct Pressure vs. Toggle Clamping: Which Is Better for Large Molds?

When molds become heavier, wider, or deeper, or require a larger projected area, the key consideration is no longer simply whether the plastic molding machine can provide sufficient rated clamping force. It is also essential to ensure the clamping force is evenly distributed across the large platen to provide adequate mold mounting space and opening stroke, prevent long-term mold deformation from uneven force distribution, and maintain parting-line stability during repeated high-pressure injection molding cycles. For this reason, as mold sizes increase, the differences between direct pressure and toggle clamping injection molding machines become more apparent.
For many applications involving small- to medium-tonnage machines, toggle-type injection molding machines remain an effective solution. However, for truly large molds and large plastic products, direct pressure injection molding machines typically offer better structural suitability.

For such applications, the selection process must consider mold load capacity and clamping structure, not just clamping force tonnage.
